General Description

East Kazakhstan is the largest industrial, power, transport and cultural region in the Republic of Kazakhstan. East Kazakhstan occupies a territory of 283.3 thousand sq. km. It is situated in north eastern Kazakhstan in the basin of the upper Irtysh river. This region borders the Altai Krai of the Russian Federation in the north and the People's Republic of China in the south east.

Population: 1442,1 thousand people; in the city -59.2%; in the village-40.8%.

Average density of the population: 5.1 men - 1 quadrate meter.

The largest ethnic groups: Russia-Kazakhs( more than 90%)

Administrative Divisions: 9 Cities, 15 regions

Administrative Center: Ust-Kamenogorsk. (291.5 citizen)

Leading Branches of Industry: Non-ferrous metallurgy; mechanical engineering; architectural engineering; instrument-making; power, timber, light and food industries.

Agriculture:

The cultivation of crops and stock-breeding.

Transport:

Air, rail, motor-car and water transport.

Distance to Astana - 1038 km.

At the beginning of 2005, there were registered - 11 institutions. System of professional education-79 learning institutions- 42 of them colleges.
