This center was established in 1994 and was assigned the mission of advancing the field of nuclear science and technology. The National Nuclear Center took an active part in designing the Program of Nuclear Energy Development, which focused on using nuclear power installations. They have passed international tests and are rated extremely safe. This project shows economic expediency in the building of nuclear power stations.
Problems of nuclear waste, used reactor fuel and the closing down of nuclear power stations are a very significant parts of the Nuclear Center's activity. The center also sets its hopes on junior-staff training. They are being prepared for work at the Center, as well as in the whole sphere of nuclear power in Kazakhstan. The Center maintains contacts with institutions of higher educational in the region-the Tomsk Polytechnical University in Russia and the Nuclear Energy Institute. About 30 young specialists are engaged in the work in Kurchatov. The average specialist's age is about 40 years.
